3 Signs You Need To Cut Back On Coffee
Oh coffee, how I love you…
Unfortunately, giving up coffee was the one thing that really helped me heal from adrenal fatigue years ago.
If you’ve been really struggling with your energy, trying to make changes to your diet and lifestyle to increase it and searching for a way you can get back to feeling like you… it may be time to give up coffee!
3 Signs You Might Need To Give Up Coffee
1. You are tired ALL the freakin time
You hit snooze multiple times every morning. You struggle to actually get your butt out of bed.
“Breakfast? What breakfast? I wait until the last minute to get up and then rush out the door.”
You totally get the daily afternoon crash between 2 and 4pm. Sometimes coffee is the only thing that gets you through an evening appointment or chore.
Even when you do get extra sleep, you still wake up feeling tired.
These are all signs that something is not right. In fact, these are signals from your body that your adrenal glands are working over time.
What are the adrenal glands and what do they do for us?
The adrenals are to pea-sized glands that sit on top of our kidneys. They are responsible for releasing the hormones that create a stress response (fight or flight mode) in our body.
Hormones like adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol are released to help our bodies out in times of emergency. They increase our heart rate, prime our muscles for action and quicken our breathing. This fight or flight mode is our total primal instinct. This reaction to stress was created to keep us alive and out of danger.
The problem is your body views all stressors as an emergency, whether that be having to slam on your breaks or run away from a bear, or just simply running late to work or… having a cup of coffee!
Yup, that’s right. Drinking coffee actually stimulates the adrenals to release cortisol, which in turn puts us in the fight or flight response.
2. You NEED Coffee to function
We all know this person. They literally NEED coffee to physically get up and get going. They have multiple cups per day and are often the ones pulling into Starbucks at 10pm.
Now even if you’re not a total coffee addict… you may still relate to the theme of needing coffee as a pick me up quite regularly.
Why is this “so bad”?
Here’s the thing… the more your adrenals fire and release cortisol, the more stressed our body gets. The more frequently this cortisol release occurs, the more time it takes for our body to actually recover and lower our cortisol.
If this process happens over and over and frequently, eventually the adrenal glands get worn out. That’s when you get that exhausted feeling AND start to feel like you need quite caffeine or sugar sources to actually get you going.
3. You CRAVE salty foods
Craving salt is actually your bodies way of telling you it needs MINERALS.
Minerals like sodium, potassium, manganese, zinc, magnesium, calcium to name a few.
Making sure we get a balance of these in our diet is super important for the regulation of our nervous system, muscle firing, and body processes.
BUT it’s especially important for our adrenal glands that run on minerals!
If you’re the type of person to salt your food before tasting it or you notice yourself craving salty things often… it could be a sign that your adrenals need support.
Try adding Pink Himalayan Sea Salt to your foods our a combination mineral supplement.
Oh ya and cut back on coffee!
What Can I Drink Instead?
If you’re looking for alternatives to caffeine (which includes not only cutting coffee, but black and green teas and energy drinks) why not try:
